About Us

motionball is a not-for-profit organization that builds awareness and raises funds for the Special Olympics Canada Foundation (SOCF), targeting a “next generation” of supporters – Canada’s professional crowd who are not defined by their age but rather their mind-set.

motionball’s mandate is to introduce the Special Olympics movement to donors,
volunteers and sponsors through integrated social and sporting events, creating relevant, meaningful experiences that help bring the fun back into giving. Since its inception in 2002, motionball has organized and operated more than 44 events in 4 major Canadian cities and as a result of the many individuals, partners and organizations who have supported the movement over the past several years, motionball delivered to the SOCF its original financial goal of its first donated $1 million four years ahead of its planned schedule. motionball has currently donated over $1,600,000 net.

motionball currently organizes four Annual events in Toronto (The Gala; Marathon of
Sport; Fall Classic Golf Tournament; Football Frenzy Flag Football Tournament) and
two in Vancouver (Gala; Marathon of Sport), two in Calgary (Gala which is set to launch April 2010 and Marathon of Sport) as well as a Marathon of Sport in Halifax (with a Gala expected to launch in 2010) and plans for a Marathon of Sport in Ottawa in the fall of 2010. motionball’s objective is to launch the Marathon of Sport event into every major city across Canada with a financial objective to donate $500,000 each year to the SOCF in 2 years time. 2010 marks an exciting year for motionball as we will be running the Marathon of Sport event in 5 possibly 6 (Montreal) major cities – Toronto, Vancouver, Halifax; Calgary; Ottawa and Montreal.

Did you know that 1% of all Canadians are intellectually disabled? And while SOC has
successfully registered 33,000 Canadians into its program – this number represents only 10% of the 1%. Through its events, motionball’s hope is to influence a positive change in these numbers by engaging more Canadians, building awareness and growing funds to support the SOC movement.

All of motionball’s proceeds go directly to the Special Olympics Canada Foundation
(SOCF-charity # 869562041 RR0001) whose objective is to provide funding for athlete
and volunteer recruitment and training for each provincial/territorial chapter. In addition, and at motionball’s request, 50% of the funds are sent to the Special Olympics chapter where the motionball event occurs (ex. 50% of proceeds from Toronto events are sent to Special Olympics Ontario to help fund the grass root level organizations that are so key to the SOC structure – to help pay for team uniforms; tournament costs; travel expenses; equipment; as well as the “Healthy Athlete” programs).
