Marathon of Sport, presented by Sun Life Financial, is an intense day of athletic competition that sees motionball supporters compete alongside Special Olympians in a range of sports.
Coupled with a participants’ pledge drive, the Marathon of Sport is one of the highlights of our fundraising calendar, and the excitement is spreading across the nation. motionball is honoured to welcome Sun Life Financial as title sponsor, and as our partner in growing Marathon of Sport across Canada.
Eighteen teams of 10 people – each team joined by a Special Olympic Athlete – compete against each other in basketball, beach volleyball, soccer, ultimate and bocce, with points awarded for victories and ties in each event. Sportsmanship and fair play are also rewarded.
Our goal is to have fun with sport and to gather Vancouver’s next generation and introduce them to the benefits of Special Olympics, and to some of the athletes themselves. Marathon of Sport is a celebration of the Special Olympics family, and a chance to get together on the field for a common cause.
Registration
This year’s event will be held at the Electronic Arts Sports complex, located at 4330 Sanderson Way, Burnaby. You can find a map to the EA Sports complex here.
Volunteers will be available to collect donation sheets, cheques and cash at registration. Please remember to bring all your fully completed sheets in the morning – once the events have started, donations will no longer be counted towards your team total!
We hope you’ll keep the Special Olympics motto in mind throughout the day: Let me win but if I can not win, let me be brave in the attempt. Also, we’d ask that you respect the volunteers who have given generously of their time to help us out, and the grounds of the EA Sports Complex which has been generously donated for our use.
All of our Marathon of Sport participants are invited to help support Special Olympics by gathering pledges. Funds gathered through pledges will be directed to the Special Olympics Canada Foundation, and used to support both national and local Special Olympics clubs.
All money raised in pledges will be credited on a dollar-to-dollar basis against a participant’s registration fee. As well, in order to encourage and reward participants who put in the extra effort that pledge gathering requires, motionball is pleased to offer a range of incentives.
